Podoknica

In the tradition of podoknica, a young man would show that he is able to sing – standing beneath a window, offering a song to the girl he had chosen. It was a way of showing not only voice, but presence, courage, interest and a certain lightness of spirit.

And perhaps, if she saw that he was not alone – that he had friends beside him, supporting him musically and through their companionship – she might think: ‘there is something about this one’. Maybe even inviting him in, joking that he looks a little cold out there on that ladder, and that she could warm him up… 😉

Podoknica isn’t just a playful tradition – it is about connection, effort, and showing someone they matter. A man would step forward openly, while a woman would receive and respond in her own way, creating a shared moment of presence. Even though roles and how we connect have evolved, our need for sincere attention and appreciation hasn’t changed. Traditions like this remind us of something simple and natural. We may no longer sing under windows, but the essence remains the same – and when it appears, even in a subtle way, it never feels outdated.
